Our Story

Built Inside a Restaurant.
Not a Boardroom.

Playbook was created from firsthand experience with one of the biggest challenges facing independent restaurants: important information lives everywhere.

SOPs are in binders. Training happens verbally. Announcements disappear in text messages. Standards can change depending on who’s managing. Recognition gets forgotten. And too much of what makes a restaurant successful exists only in the owner’s or manager’s head.

Playbook was built to change that.

One place for your standards, your training, your people, your accountability—and your culture.

The Founder

Built by a Restaurant Operator, for Restaurant Operators.

Israel Johnson opened his first restaurant at just 23 years old and has since owned and operated multiple independent restaurant concepts.

He holds a Master’s degree in Hospitality Management from Florida International University and brings more than two decades of experience across restaurant operations, leadership, culinary arts, and hospitality education.

But Playbook wasn’t created in a classroom or dreamed up in a software company’s conference room.

It was built inside an operating restaurant.

While actively managing restaurant operations, Israel began developing Playbook to solve the same problems independent operators face every day: training employees consistently, preserving SOPs, communicating expectations, recognizing great performance, creating accountability, developing leaders, and making sure the restaurant’s standards don’t exist only inside the manager’s head.

Those real-world solutions became Playbook.

A word from our founder

60 seconds with Israel Johnson on why culture wins—and how Playbook puts training, standards, communication, and recognition in one place.

The Origin

One Restaurant Became the Testing Ground.

Playbook began with a simple question:

What if everything a restaurant needs its people to know, understand, and execute could live in one place?

The platform was developed and refined inside an operating restaurant, where training systems, certifications, SOPs, employee recognition, communication, accountability tools, and management processes could be tested against the realities of everyday restaurant operations.

Features weren’t added simply because they sounded good.

They were created because real operational problems needed solutions.

That experience shaped the philosophy behind Playbook: technology should make running an independent restaurant simpler, clearer, and more consistent—not add another layer of complexity.

Why Independent Restaurants

Independent Doesn’t Mean You Should Operate Alone.

Large restaurant organizations have corporate training departments, human-resource teams, operations departments, sophisticated systems, and extensive technology.

Independent operators often have themselves.

Playbook exists to help close that gap.

We believe independent restaurants deserve professional management technology designed around the realities of running one restaurant exceptionally well—without enterprise complexity, unnecessary infrastructure, or per-employee pricing.

One Restaurant. One Team. One Culture. One Playbook.

Culture Philosophy

Culture Doesn’t Happen by Accident.

“Culture is the collection of behaviors that a group consistently rewards, tolerates, or repeats.”

Technology alone doesn’t create a great restaurant. People do.

Playbook gives independent operators the systems to establish expectations, train their people, recognize excellence, address problems, preserve institutional knowledge, develop leaders, and intentionally build the culture they want.
